The 1980 Can-Am MX6 is aN interesting motorcycle with an even more interesting reputation. Since their entry into the sport in the early 70’s Can-AM’s motocross offerings were defined by two main character traits. 1: Class leading power from their Austrian built Rotax engines. 2: Chassis that were described by most racers and journalists as “adequate at best”.

By the late 70’s Can-Am was desperately trying to remain relevant in the Motocross segment as the Japanese big four and the established European brands closed the horsepower gap to the Orange, Canadian / Austrian built machines. Having lost their horsepower advantage and loosing further ground to the new powerhouses of the sport on the track and sales floor, Can-Am completely redesigned their 250cc and 400cc MX bikes. The new machine was called the MX6.

The MX6 had a brand new chassis design that was a marked improvement on the previous generation and even managed to improve the output of the 250cc and 400cc engine thanks to a integrated ram-air system that funneled air through the top tube of the frame to the airbox mounted under the seat. The single cylinder, two stroke Rotax engine was rated at 37bhp in 250cc trim and was constructed of magnesium to help the bike tip the scales at a paltry 216lbs dry. All of these improvements lead Cycle World Magazine to vote the Can-Am the 250cc Motocross bike of the year in 1980.

This 250cc MX6 is a excellent restoration candidate for a vintage MX enthusiast who is looking for something different in a sea of Yamaha’s and Honda’s. It is in good running condition and is ready for a weekend trip to the dunes or even your next AHRMA race weekend! The carburetor has been serviced and tuned, the brakes and clutch have been adjusted and multiple leaks on the engine have been sealed. The top end of the engine was disassembled, inspected and cleaned including vapor blasting the cylinder head and jug. New Motocross tires and tubes have also been fitted front and rear.
